INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT RUPP

For the past 15 years, Upper Makefield Township has been home to Upper Makefield Township Parks and Recreation Board Chair Robert Rupp; his wife, Wendy; daughter Lucy, a junior at Council Rock High School North; twin sons, Simon and Max, who just graduated college; and the family’s golden retriever, Brigette. From watching youth sports to walking the dog, the Rupps have spent a good amount of time enjoying the town’s recreational areas. Here, Robert Rupp describes his role in keeping these facilities in tip-top shape for all residents to enjoy.

Why did you get involved with the Parks and Recreation Board, and what are your primary duties?

Watching my son and his friends play Patriot FC soccer at Brownsburg Park in 2019 drew me to join the township’s Parks and Recreation Board. As chair since 2022, I lead the committee in improving local parks and making sure community voices are heard along the way. For me, the best part is simple: giving back to the community and knowing the work makes a real difference.

Why is it important for residents to get involved with local boards and commissions?

The township relies on its approximately 65 volunteers—their time, local knowledge, and input—to help guide the Board of Supervisors in making the community better.

When you were growing up, were parks and recreational activities an important part of your life?

Parks have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—from playgrounds as a kid to team sports growing up. I was able to enjoy that same experience all over again through my own children. Now we frequent the park mostly with our golden retriever, Brigette.

What makes Upper Makefield Township’s parks special?

Brownsburg Park and Lookout Park are where our children play team sports and enjoy the playgrounds. The parks also offer basketball, tennis, jogging paths, and paths to walk our pets. Many residents rent the pavilions for birthdays and other special events. The new butterfly garden has been especially popular—both for its beauty and as a peaceful place for quiet reflection.

What are some ways community members can support the parks?

If you visit the Upper Makefield Township website, you’ll find a couple of great ways to support the parks. The buy-a-brick program lets you purchase a brick for $50 and personalize it with a saying, a pet’s name, or your family name—it’s then installed along the walkway at Brownsburg Pavilion to greet visitors. You can also find information on our website about purchasing a memorial tree to be planted in the park. It’s a wonderful way for residents to leave a lasting mark on the community.

Does the township have any future plans for the parks?

We’re currently working on several plans to improve Brownsburg Park and the playground, and have submitted for a grant to help cover the costs. Stay tuned—we’re excited about what’s ahead.

What do you love about living in Upper Makefield Township?

Upper Makefield and Bucks County are a beautiful, historic part of Pennsylvania. It’s a picturesque area that somehow manages to feel peaceful and close-knit while still being just a short drive from New York City, Philadelphia, the Poconos, and the beach—the best of all worlds. We love taking advantage of the local and state parks, getting out on the golf course, gathering with friends, and frequenting the fantastic restaurants the area has to offer. There’s always something to do—it never gets old. We have a vibrant local community.
